Events in Myszyniec
On 31 May and 22 November two events were held in Myszyniec. As many as 272 people were examined during the first event, while 220 people took part in the second one. 77 inhabitants were referred to a pulmonology clinic (in the first event there were 25 referrals, in the second one- 52). During both events tests have shown that cholesterol causes the biggest problem for the inhabitants. Its increased level was reported in 244 cases. Blood pressure was on the second place in terms of test results with exceeded standard level. Higher blood pressure was reported in 187 cases during both events. While triglycerides tests showed that 146 persons had an increased level in this regard.
Examinations in Myszyniec attracted the interest of the inhabitants. Most of them were informed about the event by telephone messages sent by the personnel of the City Council in Myszyniec. The inhabitants underline that taking the organization and flow of information into account, it would be a sin not to take part in the examinations. “You can get an examination and check whatever you want without queuing,” explains an inhabitant of Białusny Lasek. “To be examined, we have to go to Olsztyn or Ostrołęka, no one would perform tests near here, and right now everything is on site! If you’re not forced by an illness, you have no time for examinations,” adds an inhabitant of Myszyniec, “a simple examination takes at least three days. One day spent at GP to get a referral, second day on examination and third day on collecting the results,” continues an inhabitant of Gadomskie. “When would we find time for this? Besides, most of the tests are not for free. Here, everything is free of charge and medical service in nice, nurses are patient and kind,” highlights an inhabitant of Myszyniec. “If medical service was as well organized as it is here, almost no one would be ill,” she adds.
During both events a lot of people in Myszyniec sought advice during dieticians’ consultations. They were performed with the help of the Healthy Eating Pyramid. Dieticians could not only advise but also point out, which of the products cause undesired effects to the human organism e.g. leading to obesity and increasing the level of cholesterol and triglycerides. “We need to start following the diet,” explain the inhabitants of Myszyniec, “we work together and every day one of us bakes a cake and shares it. Until today, we couldn’t imagine drinking coffee without eating a piece of cake! Now we will have to follow dieticians’ advice, because cholesterol as well as triglycerides are high. Maybe we won’t go on a strict diet immediately, but we have to start to cut down on sweets and forget about scrambled eggs on bacon,” they say.
The inhabitants of Myszyniec highlight that there is a need for another event focusing on prevention of other diseases.
Next event “I take care of my breath – prevention of respiratory system diseases in Ostrołęka District” will be held on 12 December, in banquet room at 16 Kościelna Street in Łyse.

If an illness isn't serious, it’s hard to find time for monitoring it– adds an inhabitant of Myszyniec. – one needs to set minimum three days aside only for the basic examinations. One day for going to a family doctor for the referral, the other day for examinations, and the third day for collecting the results – explained a woman who lives in Gadomskie, - It’s hard to find the time for all that. - Apart from that, one has to pay for the majority of examinations. Dietitians not only advised but also pointed which products produce undesirable effects in human body including: causing obesity and increasing level of cholesterol and triglycerides. – We must follow the diet- explained the inhabitants of Myszyniec. - We work together and see each other every day, one of us brings cake to work. So far we haven't imagined that it’s possible to drink coffee without eating a piece of cake during the break. Now it’s necessary to obey to recommendations of dietitians because the level of cholesterol and triglycerides is high. Perhaps we won’t immediately go on a strict diet but gradually it will be necessary to start cutting down on sweets and to forget about scrambled eggs on bacon - they said.

Project in Troszyn
About 170 persons took part in the successful preventive action organized as a part of the project “I take care of my breath – prevention of respiratory diseases in the Ostrołęka poviat”. This time the meeting was held on the 8th of November in the Municipal Cultural Center in Troszyn.
The action, organized for the 17th time, evoked interest not only among Troszyn’s inhabitants. The people from neighboring communes took part in examinations either. They gained medical consultation and advice of dietitians and underwent examinations measuring the level of their cholesterol, triglycerides, pressure, pulse, sugar, carbon dioxide etc. They also took advantage of the spirometry tests.
– I am so glad that I had an opportunity to take so many examinations in one place – says an inhabitant of the Piski commune. – I have huge problems with breathing, persistent cough but also I am worried about results of other examinations. – he adds.
– Spirometry examination went well but examinations of cholesterol’s and triglycerides’ level went poorly – marks a Choroman resident.
The actions like this one are needed in the opinion of the poviat’s inhabitants because they mobilize people to pay attention to health. – It’s the first time I have done examinations of this type. I never had time, besides when you are not ill, it is hard to go to the doctor. Thanks to that it is possible at least to get to know, whether something serious ails oneself – explains an inhabitant of Wiśniew.
The competitors of shooting championships also took part in the action in Troszyn. – It is always good to learn and take care of the condition of one’s health.
– We take part in shooting competitions now. Certainly every action of this type is needed. However, it should be cyclical and organized with support from various environments – underlines Eugeniusz Gorczyca, from the Sport Shooting Club "Defender" in Troszyn.
The next action from the project will take place on the 22th of November in Myszyniec.

Project in District of Lelis
Yet another action was conducted in Łęg Przedmiejski, where 48 persons were assigned to more detailed examinations to the pulmonological clinic. 160 persons took part in prophylactic examinations in the framework of the project "I take care of my breath- prevention of respiratory diseases in the Ostrołęka poviat", which were held on the 4th of October in a Complex of Schools in Łęg Przedmiejski.
One of the main goals of the project is to make residents of the Ostrołęka poviat aware of the harmfulness of the active and passive smoking. Due to conducting the basic examination - spirometry test it was shown, only during the one organized action in Łęg Podmiejski, 20 persons were diagnosed with high level of the carbon monoxide in the exhaled air.
The cause of such a high-level result is probably smoking cigarettes. The indicator in case of non-smokers should not exceed 6 units of the carbon monoxide in the exhaled air – Examinations conducted as part of the action not only allowed to show possible irregularities in functioning of the respiratory system, but also helped to motivate smoking persons to break the habit - underlines Aldona Kuciej, project coordinator.
During the action 62 persons received inhalers, 33 received apparatuses which helped them to get the knowledge of correct respiration (gymnastics of breath).
As in previous meetings, residents could measured their level of triglycerides, cholesterol, sugar, pressure, as well as find out about their weight and height. They also had the possibility to talk with the dietitian and have medical consultation.
The action in Łęg Przedmiejski was a second one conducted in the Lelis commune.
"I take care of my breath" in Czerwin
135 persons participated in the prophylactic action “I take care of my breath – prevention of respiratory diseases in the Ostrołęka poviat” organised in Czerwin for the second time. Examinations were held on the 27th of September in a building of the Municipal Cultural Center. The inhabitants of the commune could have their sugar, cholesterol, triglycerides levels measured and blood pressure checked, as well as they could be weighted and their height measured-all free of charge. They could also undergo the spirometry test for free. They consulted the obtained examinations’ results with doctors and dietitians.
It is a necessary action, particularly for people like me, who don’t have time. Additionally it is for free and without queues – says one of participants in the action- Stanisław Umijski- who lives in Wisniewa. There are other inhabitants of the commune who are of similar opinion. – I have problems with the respiration. For over three years a cough has been torturing me. Thanks to this action I will learn what ails me – says Kazimierz Mierzejewski who lives in Pisk.
– I never had such examinations because I felt they weren't needed. For the first time I had my sugar, triglycerides and cholesterol measured. It is very probable that I wouldn't ever have gone to a doctor if it wasn’t for this – adds Krystyna Gumkowska from Choroman. Village administrators, commune administrators, employees of offices of communes and councilors of the Ostrołęka poviat all took part in those actions.
–That’s a very good opportunity to examine, to measure sugar and cholesterol level. I hope there will be more such actions – notes Jan Wiśniewski, councilor of the county in Ostrołęka poviat.
Customarily, the action in Czerwin was accompanied by educational and healthy food stalls. With the use of the healthy food pyramid dietitians advised how to take care about health based on a well-balanced diet.
Additionally, as a part of the project, on the 28th of September in Czerwin educational classes took place with participation of the youth from the Complex of Schools. The group of 60 young people was informed by qualified medical staff of dangers connected with psychedelic substances, smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol and using drugs. Young people actively took part in classes and in particular in the experiments connected with smoking cigarette. At the end of classes the youth received T-shirts with the logo of the project and could help themselves to some fruits.
